Reinvent Myself?

by Barbara B. Appelbaum 28. September 2011 08:00

Lately I’ve heard a lot of talk about Baby Boomers needing to reinvent themselves. What does that mean exactly? If you are not happy with the direction your life has gone, does that mean you need to “reinvent yourself” and completely change who you are? That sounds like a lot of work and frankly, a bit unrealistic. Basically we are who we are at our core. The real question should be are you living authentically?

As is normal with most people, you’re living a life doing what others think you should versus what you choose and that is the true culprit of your unhappiness. Remember your thoughts dictate your feelings which guide your actions. When your thoughts are wrapped up in ‘should’ it creates negative or catabolic feelings and actions. When you shift your thoughts to ‘choice’ it creates positive or anabolic feelings and actions. Therefore, you’re more likely to be satisfied with a life of your choosing because you’re filled with anabolic or positive energy.

So why spend the time “reinventing” yourself, especially based on others’ preconceived notions of who you should be? My advice, stop “should’ing” all over yourself! Don’t you think your time would be better spent simply getting in touch with your authentic self and choosing who you want to be and how you want to show up in the world?  Now that’s realistic!
