Am I Losing My Mind?

One of the biggest fears facing baby boomers is memory loss. As we age, we tend to forget things. And, depending what we forget, we begin to fear the worst like the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. First, let’s define age-related memory loss in simple terms: When you misplace your car keys, that’s being forgetful. When you forget what the keys are used for, that’s a sign to contact your doctor as you may have something more serious going on. To stave off age-related memory loss, challenge your brain every day. Think of it as exercise for your brain health!

Here are some ideas you can try:

1. Use your non-dominate hand to write. It’s quite challenging and the results may make you laugh!

2. Do puzzles. Crosswords, word searches, & Sudoku are all great options to tax your brain in different ways.

3. Learn a new skill or language. Again, this challenges your brain to work differently than what it is used to.

4. Play on the computer and learn new programs.

5. Read as much as you can. Books, magazines, etc. are all good options to stimulate your brain.

6. Eat healthfully. You really are what you eat and your brain knows it.

7. Exercise regularly and vary your routines. It’s good for your brain and body as well as fun!

Whatever you do, do something that stimulates your brain. The old adage is true: if you don’t use it, you will lose it. So be sure to use it every day!
