If you don’t care about yourself, how can you expect someone else too? Everything begins with how you feel about yourself on the inside. That reflects on the outside. Whether you notice or not, others will. Quite honestly, you will notice it too even if only in subtle ways at first.
Achieving wellness begins and ends with self-care. It’s about nurturing the mind-body-spirit connection through living a balanced, low stress life. Someone once asked me how I find the motivation to stick to a diet and exercise regularly. First, I do not “diet.” I eat right for life. I do that as well as exercise because my life depends on it. It’s that simple.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you can’t splurge or be lazy once in awhile. Just be very aware of when the negative habits start to overtake your life so you can nip them immediately. Otherwise you will find your quality of life being challenged and the only one to blame will be you.
It’s important to remember that your core thoughts determine your core feelings which influence your core actions. So when you give a sh*t about yourself and take care of your mind, body and spirit, you will radiate a positive energy that will enhance the quality of your wellbeing.
To your wellness!
What would happen if you unplugged yourself from your computer, smart phone and other technology for a few hours? Would your world come to an end? Would you suffer withdrawal? Many of us have grown so dependent on technology that it is almost like a drug. I see people texting while driving, talking on the cell phone while exercising, and sitting for hours slouched over their computers lost in a daze staring into the glowing screen. I try to avoid these behaviors but what about you? Are you a tech addict?
I’d like to challenge you to unplug for a few hours. Go outside and look around you. Spring is upon us! Take in the sights and sounds of your beautiful surroundings. Go for a walk and use the melody of the birds chirping to inspire the spring in your step. Nourish your body with deep breaths of fresh air. Relax and let go. It’s okay. Your computer and/or smart phone will be waiting for you when you return so you won’t have missed anything. But consider if you don’t unplug. What do you miss every day by keeping your nose buried in technology?
When I weighed myself this morning, much to my chagrin I gained 6 pounds over the past two weeks! Prior to that, it has taken me almost one full year to lose 20 lbs. “Walking the talk” by eating right, exercising, getting plenty of rest, etc. proves challenging on a regular basis and I thought it important for me to share that with you.
People seem to put me on a pedestal and think I don’t really understand their struggles. You see, I’m just as human as you are. I work to have the life I want and sometimes find it difficult to stay the course when my body doesn’t want to cooperate. For example, my eating and exercise habits haven’t changed over the past few weeks yet I can tell that my body is going through some sort of inner battle because I just feel “off” and gained that excess weight for no apparent reason. Years ago, I would have drown my sorrows in more food and gotten lost in the cyclone of self-destruction. Now, I take this situation as a reminder to encourage myself forward and realize that sometimes we have to take a few steps back in order to propel further forward.
What do you do when your body betrays all the effort you put into making it the best it can be? You might give up, as many do. As easy as that may be, do you really want to give up on yourself? Or, do you want to stay the course and prove to yourself that you are strong? Personally, I opt for continuing the fight, staying the course, and doing the best that I can to remain living in wellness. You see, wellness is a way of life. It’s not something you chose to do one day and not the next. I do hope you will join me and live in wellness today and always!
