With the lead story on the news every day being the BP Oil crisis in the Gulf, I don’t know about you, but my stomach gets tied up in knots whenever I see the pictures and graphics displayed. We all understand this is an environmental and economic crisis of epic proportions. It will most likely affect the planet for generations to come. But what comes to my mind is how might this impact our wellness?
First, it is disturbing to hear all of the media’s crisis-laden reporting techniques. That unto itself can make us sick to our stomachs whenever we turn on the computer, television or radio.
Second, the American Heart Association recommends eating fish and other seafood at least twice a week for its heart healthy omega-3 fats to help reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. How will this affect our accessibility to fish both in availability and price?
It is understandable to be concerned about the long-term affects from exposure to the oil as well as the dispersants. Considering this is the first crisis of its type and magnitude, as much as we pose our questions does anyone really know the answers? Can we do anything to change the situation?
Some things are out of our control. Whether this specific crisis or any other tragedy, we do have control over our reactions and emotions. How would you feel if you were able to shift your perspective when exposed to stories about this or any disaster? We can recognize the gravity of the situation yet choose to not let it add stress to our life. When we feel our stomachs tightening we can turn off the newscast. We can help by making a donation or volunteering. Each person can make a difference in their community. And by volunteering and/or being part of a community, one contributes to the quality of their wellness.
